The department of Botany began its journey as a general course under the University of Calcutta from 1997, with one full-time teacher, two part timers and one laboratory-bearer. In 2002, Honours course was opened after minimum requisite infrastructure was built up and more teachers were posted. Ninety per cent students obtained first class in the very first batch. At present the department along with all other departments of the college is under the West Bengal State University. The number of teaching posts is eight and non-teaching is two. All six teachers of the department have research experience with twenty seven publications in the last five years. Two UGC minor research projects are running in the department. There is a well-stocked Seminar Library with 500 books. There is internet facility and one UGC-sponsored SMART class room, equipped with portable projector, PEN display and Sound system. Two students of 2014-15 are rank holders in B.Sc. Botany Honours examination of WBSU.
