In the year of 2012 two (02) senior teachers (Associate Professors) in Geography pioneered to set up the Department of Geography in the New Administrative Building of Bidhannagar College after it got affiliation in the same year. In the year of 2013 regular classes (with total number of seats being 30) began after the routine admission procedure of the college.
In the year of 2014 three (03) more teachers joined (one Associate Professor and two Assistant Professors) to give it the status of a full staffed department. It is a well poised department with the combination of veteran as well as young teachers which helps to run the department smoothly with the experience of the veterans and exuberance of the youngsters. A good harmony is maintained which is maintained in the academic scenario also.
Well equipped with a Smart Class room, a GIS & RS Lab, considerably good number of books in the Seminar Library, this department of Geography supports under Graduate Hons. Course to be taught here.
Most of the students are commuters from the umland of the megacity while lesser numbers are from the megacity itself. Over all the students are docile, helpful and diligent. They are quick learners. Other than interest in academics, the students have proficiency in extracurricular activities too. They bring laurels for the department as well as the college in games and sports and cultural activities. They are regular contributors to college magazine and departmental magazine. They take active participation in excursions, seminars, NSS activities, Blood Donation Camps and other programmes organized by the department and the college. All these are educative as well as entertaining curriculum that enhances the teacher-taught relationship. This shows that the department is blessed with a balanced community of students.
This is the youngest department of the college that has been supporting routine Hons. Course from 2013. Hence, final result is yet to be produced. The final result of the first Hons. Graduate Batch is supposed to come out around July 2016. However, the intermediary results of the Part-I and Part-II students have been almost satisfactory. Keeping all these into consideration, the department of Geography is looking forward to prove itself as one of the phenomenal department of Bidhannagar College in terms of both academics and other curricular activities.
