AnOverview

Decision-making and that too under uncertainty, is the ultimate requirement of the present civilization – whether it is in governance, or in commerce, or in society, or in scientific research and the like. Although information technology fosters Information Revolution round the globe but “information” or “knowledge” in whatever form it is available, is confounded with a great variety of uncertainties or errors. Having lots of information is not enough, we must synchronize that and present in an understandable precise form. Moreover, besides the available knowledge, uncertainties (or information) should be revealed up to the hilt. Therefore, study of Statistical Science has a growing need today and also in the days to come Statistics must have endless scope to play a leading role in the age of information we are living.

Uncertain Knowledge + Knowledge of the amount of Uncertainty = Usable Knowledge

The department of Statistics is one of the few pioneering departments of Bidhannagar College established in 1986. At the inception, Statistics was taught only as a sub-major subject of study at the General UG-level. The department started offering Statistics as a major subject of study at the Advance/Honours UG level simultaneously along with the existing courses from the year 1999. At present department have five full-time faculties. Department currently has a well-equipped computer laboratory with 12 (twelve) desktop computers with a good statistical computing facilities. The department also poses a seminar library comprising of books covering different topics is Statistics. Books are issued to the students as well as to the teachers regularly. Faculties are engaged in quality research works with the collaboration with other renowned institutions such as (1) Indian Statistical Institute, Kolkata and (2) Department of Statistics, University of Calcutta. They are regularly delivering presentations on their research in various national, international conferences and workshops held in India and abroad too. In addition to this, their research continuously is getting recognition through the publication in reputed international peer-reviewed journals.

Apart from all the regular academic activities, students are encouraged to be part of different social and cultural activities through the participation in NSS (National Social Scheme). Students are also organized freshers’ welcome program for newly admitted students, fare-well program for the out-going students, Teachers’ Day celebration and publication of wall magazine L’Analytique.

Despite of some limitations, there is no dearth in the efforts to make this department a true centre of enjoying the study on Statistics and hope the students of this department will continue in proving their worth and abilities in various spheres of our society through their qualities, knowledge and aptitudes in Statistics.

R-Programming for Statistical Computing In order to pursue analysis of data better and sophistically, hands-on learning program has been started in this department from the session 2016-17 as a part of the curriculum introduced in the under-graduate syllabus of Statistics (Honours) in West Bengal State University, Barasat, under which Bidhannagar College is affiliated. R is a language and environment for statistical computing and graphics. It is a GNU project which is similar to the S language and environment which was developed at Bell Laboratories (formerly AT&T, now Lucent Technologies) by John Chambers and colleagues. R can be considered as a different implementation of S. There are some important differences, but much code written for S runs unaltered under R. R provides a wide variety of statistical (linear and nonlinear modeling, classical statistical tests, time-series analysis, classification, clustering) and graphical techniques, and is highly extensible. The S language is often the vehicle of choice for research in statistical methodology, and R provides an Open Source route to participation in that activity.

One of R’s strengths is the ease with which well-designed publication-quality plots can be produced, including mathematical symbols and formulae where needed. Great care has been taken over the defaults for the minor design choices in graphics, but the user retains full control. R is available as Free Software under the terms of the Free Software Foundation’s GNU General Public License in source code form. It compiles and runs on a wide variety of UNIX platforms and similar systems (including FreeBSD and Linux), Windows and MacOS. R, like S, is designed around a true computer language, and it allows users to add additional functionality by defining new functions. Much of the system is itself written in the R dialect of S, which makes it easy for users to follow the algorithmic choices made. For computationally-intensive tasks, C, C++ and Fortran code can be linked and called at run time. Advanced users can write C code to manipulate R objects directly. Many users think of R as a statistics system. We prefer to think of it of an environment within which statistical techniques are implemented. R can be extended (easily) via packages. There are about eight packages supplied with the R distribution and many more are available through the CRAN family of Internet sites covering a very wide range of modern statistics.
