AnOverview

Bidhannagar College had started its teaching courses only in Honours subjects. Later on many P.G. courses were introduced in various subjects. Physics Honours course was started in this college since 1987. Initially, the college was under University of Calcutta but it went under West Bengal State University, Barasat, since 2008. In the year 2004, the students’ intake was 24 in the first year Physics Honours course. Currently the students’ intake in the first year Honours course is 35.

The Physics Department has well equipped Laboratories -General Physics & Heat, Optics, Electronics, containing many valuable and sensitive modern instruments which are very helpful for the Undergraduate students. Enriched Seminar Library with several text and reference books of eminent authors are being very helpful for the students and faculty. The department has a computer Laboratory connected with internet facilities and Wi-fi system. Both the students and faculty members use these facilities extensively. The University results of the students are found very satisfactory.

This department has an academic tie up with eminent research institutes like Saha Institute of Nuclear Physics (SINP), The Indian Association for the Cultivation of Sciences (IACS), Kolkata, Visva- Bharati University, Santiniketan, University of Kalyani, etc.

Many of the faculty members have attended National/International Seminars, workshops, Science Congress, and also served the Universities in the capacity of head examiners, examiners, paper setters, moderators, member of UG Board of studies of Universities etc. and they also have attended various seminars workshops as resource persons, invited speakers etc.

Science seminars in collaboration with eminent research institutes are being organized on regular basis in this department. Participants from various colleges, Universities and research institutes participate in the seminars.

A UGC sponsored National level Seminar in collaboration with IACS, Kolkata was held in the year 2013. The eminent scientist, Professor Ashok Sen of Harishchandra Research Institute (HRI), Allahabad; Professor Palash Baran Pal of SINP, Kolkata; Professor Sanatan Chattopadhyay, University of Calcutta delivered lectures in this seminar.

One of the ex-faculty members Dr. S. K. Saha’s research work had been recognized as News Item in News India (brought by Nature). Dr. Saha was a reviewer of Indo US Project, DST, India. Dr. Saha was also reviewer of prestigious Journal: PHYSICAL REVIEW. Dr. Saha was also a visiting scientist at National Cheng Kung University, Taiwan and Dept. of Electrical & Computer Engineering, Purdue university, USA. He has also produced Ph. D. student.

Dr. A. K. Maiti, ex-faculty member of the college had done extensive research work on Transport properties of crystalline solids at Jadavpur University. He has also produced Ph. D. Students.

Dr. R. K. Ghosh, ex-Faculty Member of the college had done his Ph. D. work in the State University of New York, USA. He has done research work on “Investigation of the reason for a vanishing cosmological Constant” funded by UGC. Dr. Ghosh also has done research work in collaboration with Institute of Physics, Bhubabeshwar; HRI, Allahabad, and SINP, Kolkata. Dr. Ghosh has served as a referee for PHYSICS LETTERS A, ELESEVIER, HOLLAND.

The Department has a regular Academic Calendar that consists of (i) a regular class routine (ii) Assessment of students like regular college exams, home works, parent teachers’ meeting etc. (iii) cultural programmes being regularly held in the dept. (iv) involvement of students in different academic activities like attending seminars, visiting research institutes etc.

Many of our students passing out from this college have a very good placement records in various organizations like – WIPRO, INFOSYS, CESC, UBINETICS LTD, SWINDON, INDIAN NAVY, DELSOFT, ISI, IIT, IISc, Bangalore, TCS, ISRO CTS, USA (HIGHER STUDIES) etc.

At present the Department has non teaching staff 3 in numbers and Academic Staff 6 in numbers.

Dr. Bimal Kumar Mandal, Associate Professor and Head of the Department, has done his Ph. D. work on Experimental Condensed Matter Physics (AC conductivity of seramic HTSC samples). He has published research papers on Journals of National and International repute. He has attended many seminars, short term courses and Science Congress in various Universities.

One of the teachers of the Department, Shri Nirmal Kumar Maity, Associate Professor, is actively associated with Science NGO and has organized many science events of National standard. To mention a few events, one remarkable event is the celebration of 150th birth anniversary of Sir J. C. Bose in which Professor Paresce Marconi (grandson of DR. G. MARCONI) was present on 1st December, 2008 and another one being the celebration of 150th birth anniversary of Sir P. C. Roy in which Professor A. P. J. Abdul Kalam, ex-President of India was present. Dr. Subhasis Chakrabarti, Associate Professor, has done his M.Sc. and Ph.D. from Jadavpur University. Dr. Chakrabarti has authored twenty research papers in international journals in the fields of exciton-phonon participation in solid state photoreaction, role of phonon in solid state phase transition and Surface Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy.

One of the teachers of the Physics Department, Dr. Arun Kumar Jana, Associate Professor, has done his Ph. D. work on theoretical Nuclear Physics (Scattering Theory). He has published research papers on Journals of International repute. He has attended many seminars, workshops, winter schools in various Universities and Research Institutes of International repute of National and International level. He has conducted a Physics Seminar in Bidhannagar college in the year 2013 with key Speaker-one of the most eminent scientist of modern times- Professor Ashoke Sen of Harish Chandra Research Institute, Allahabad, India. He has also been speaker on Nuclear Physics Symposia at The Bhabha Atomic Research Centre, Mumbai.

Dr. Supriya Chatterjee, currently an Assistant Professor, has done his Ph. D. work on Theoretical Atomic Physics in the year 2015. He has published research papers on Journals of International repute. He has attended seminars in University and In research institutes. He has also presented paper in Indian science Congress held in Mysore in 2016. One of the faculties of the Physics Department, Dr. Soumyabrata Mondal, Assistant Professor has special interest on High Energy Physics. He has done his dissertation on planetary atmosphere and radio signal reception. He has more than 3 years of experience in industry. He has published more than 15 research papers on Journals of National and International repute.
